The Roman Catholic Diocese of Liverpool dates back to 1850 when the Catholic hierarchy was restored to England and the first Bishop of Liverpool was appointed.  In 1911 it became an Archdiocese, at the head of the Northern Province.  There have been over 230 churches within the Archdiocese, several of them founded in the 1700s.

The archives include records of:

— The departments of the Archdiocese (Chancery, legal, estates, and finance)

— Bishops and Archbishops (among whom Archbishops Richard Downey, George Beck, and Derek Worlock have the most significant archive footprint)

— Parishes (non-register material) covering the present geographical area of the Archdiocese, extending into Lancashire, Cheshire, and Greater Manchester and including the Isle of Man

— The Metropolitan Cathedral and the Cathedral Crypt

— The Catholic Pictorial, the Archdiocesan newspaper/magazine begun in 1962, and its predecessor the Cathedral Record (1931-1961)

— National Catholic institutions such as the Catholic Women’s League and the Union of Catholic Mothers, together with their local branches

— St Joseph’s College, Upholland (the seminary for training priests)

The archives may be seen by appointment in our reading room.
The usual opening hours are Monday-Friday 9.30-4.30.
